The path to mediation

Legal career

I have always loved the courtroom; from a professional perspective, what happens there is endlessly fascinating. I understand colleagues who choose the legal profession as their vocation. It is heartbreaking, however, to see that clients—in about 90% of cases—are no longer enthusiastic at all.

In reality, even behind “winning” cases there are often years of court hearings. This can involve enormous financial costs, sleepless nights and stressful months, deteriorated relationships that turn hostile, irreparable hurt, and even a decline in physical well-being.

Motivation

As a mediator, Dr. Dorottya Farkas LL.M.’s primary goal is not to force an agreement at any cost, but to resolve the conflict together, make a strained relationship more manageable, and create an atmosphere that enables cooperation. If this is achieved, reaching an agreement becomes a positive outcome of mediation.

In 85% of cases, an agreement truly is possible. In matters where the parties did not reach a mediated agreement, neither party indicated that they regretted participating in mediation. In litigation cases, however, clients on both sides often say: it was a mistake to start the lawsuit—if only we could have reached some kind of agreement in another way.
